Whenever I attend opera in San Francisco, I pass through Fulton Plaza, which has historically been quite unsafe, particularly on weekends when the nearby business and financial districts shut down. Over time, the Sunday market moved to the plaza.

One evening, after the opera, I was returning to the BART station. The market had closed, vendors had left, and a city cleaning crew was spraying debris from the plaza.

As if a phoenix emerging from the ashes, a beautiful orange, black, and white Koi rose from under the slickness of the water.

The Backdrop

San Francisco is revitalizing the mid-Market plaza area with support from the non-profit Illuminate. A central part of this initiative is the Koi mural. Because Fulton Plaza experiences high foot and bike traffic, Novy's street art is designed to last 5 to 10 years.‍
