Bombay’s First Female Private Detective

Rajani Pandit.

Who is Rajani Pandit? Born into a middle-class family in Palghar, in the Thane district of Mumbai, Pandit’s lineage was steeped in professional investigation. Her father, Shantaram Pandit, served as an inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department of the Mumbai police—a career distinguished by his involvement in the 1948 assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Yet, it was not merely her father’s prestige that shaped her; rather, it was his professional rigidity. In an interview with The Times of India, Pandit explains that her father’s seemingly indifferent attitude toward civilian pleas was the primary catalyst that propelled her toward a career as a private operative.

“He failed to grasp the central irony of their plight: the very absence of evidence was exactly why these people sought his unofficial counsel in the first place.”

During that era in India, citizens harbored a deep-seated reluctance to approach local precincts. The prevailing sentiment—one that persists in many contemporary circles—was that the Indian police force was systemic and “corrupt to their core.” Consequently, those in distress sought resolution through informal networks of friends, relatives, or acquaintances. Because of her father’s status as a policeman, neighbors frequently arrived at their doorstep seeking unofficial intervention; however, they were almost always turned away.

Shantaram Pandit routinely refused these requests because the complainants lacked concrete evidence. He failed to grasp the central irony of their plight: the very absence of evidence was precisely why these people sought his unofficial counsel in the first place.

Pandit vividly recalls her father’s nonchalance, a refusal to help that sparked her own defiance. She harnessed that burgeoning curiosity to break new ground, eventually becoming India’s first female detective. Even now, at forty-nine, she continues to navigate the complexities of the private sector, maintaining her status as a pioneering private investigator.
